I literally thought that my dog was dying today…When I woke up my mom offered to make me a coffee and said that she needed to talk to me about my dog outside.
I knew immediately what it was about. She said that he hadn’t moved, eaten, use the washroom, or drank in two days besides her best efforts and that she thought the two seizures he had two days ago were actually a mini stroke (which is most like true). She said that he seemed to be in the last stages of his life with renal failure and that he didn’t have long so we would make him as comfortable at home as possible so he could pass peacefully. If he were to show any signs of pain, we were going to bring him to the vet to have him be put down.
So I took a moment to calm down, and spent some time with him. My mother asked me if I would try to take him outside to see if he would go pee. So I gently carried him, against his grumpy protest, and softly placed him on the grass in our backyard. I asked him if he needed to go pee and if he needed me to hold him while he did so. To my surprise, he got up on his own, albeit he was very unstable and wobbly, and walked to his favourite spot to relieve himself. He then wobbled around wagging his tail and enjoying himself before making his way back to me. I praised him and encouraged him to walk up the three stairs of our deck, and slowly but surely he did. He walked all the way back to his bed and finally accepted food and drink, and I was so happy to see him do this!
My mom and I were relieved. We honestly thought he was going to die, and if you had seen him you would’ve thought so too, be here the little shit is eating and drinking and walking after two days! He still may be sick, but at least it gives me hope that he’ll be okay. At least he won’t kick the bucket today and to see him acting more like himself is reassuring.
TL;DR: My dog had a small stroke and we thought he was dying but he’s in better shape now.
